To determine a vehicle's value, most buyers, dealers, and financial institutions use some sort of vehicle pricing guide. Many use the NADA Official Used Car Guide or similar publications like Edmonds, Kelly's Blue Book, etc..

The problem with using these publications is that the values in these books are based on the assumption that the vehicle is in excellent to good mechanical and structural condition. Although two identical vehicles may look and drive the same, these publications can not distinguish between a properly maintained vehicle, and a vehicle with existing mechanical and/or structural problems. The difference between these two cars can be hundreds to thousands of dollars in value.

Do not rely soley on a CARFAX or other history reports as your only source for researching your new pre-owned vehicle. CARFAX only offers information about registration and ownership, lease or rental vehicle, major collision or total loss, flood, air bag deployment, repair and maintenance service performed by the dealership and some accidents if they were reported. If an accident was not reported through the insurance company, it won't show up on the CARFAX report. National Auto Inspection Services will check the entire vehicle from bumper to bumper and identify any body damage or evidence of previous body repair and even signs of abuse or neglect that can be seen visibly that a CARFAX report has missed. CARFAX also does not report on the current condition of any vehicle as they DO NOT physically inspect the vehicle; therefore, any mechanical or electrical issues like internal engine or transmission problems will not be included in their reports.
